IELTS Reading: Matching Headings — Strategy and Tips
Matching Headings is one of the trickiest IELTS Reading question types. Here is the exact technique to match paragraph headings accurately and quickly.
What is it?
Matching Headings asks you to match a list of headings to paragraphs in the passage. Each heading summarises the main idea of a paragraph. There are always more headings than paragraphs — the extra ones are distractors designed to mislead.
How to approach it
- 1Read all the headings before reading the passage — know what you are looking for.
- 2For each paragraph, read only the topic sentence (usually the first sentence) and the final sentence. These contain the main idea.
- 3Match the heading that best captures the paragraph's overall message — not just a detail mentioned in it.
- 4Eliminate easy matches first. Cross off headings you have used (unless there are shared headings).
- 5For difficult paragraphs, ask: "What is this paragraph mainly about?" not "Does this heading appear as a word in this paragraph?"
Common errors
- ✗Matching a heading because a word from it appears in the paragraph — a heading summarises the whole paragraph, not a single detail.
- ✗Reading entire paragraphs in detail — this wastes time. Focus on topic sentences and final sentences.
- ✗Not using process of elimination — if you are stuck, eliminating wrong answers is often faster than finding the right one.
- ✗Choosing a heading that only applies to part of the paragraph.
Time allocation
Spend no more than 2 minutes per heading match. Matching Headings questions typically take 8–12 minutes for a set of 6–7.
FAQs
Can the same heading be used for more than one paragraph?▼
Usually not — the instructions will state "NB You may use any letter more than once" if this is allowed. Unless the instructions say so, each heading is used once only.
Should I read the passage before looking at the headings?▼
For Matching Headings, read the headings first. This gives you a mental map of what ideas the passage covers and makes scanning much more efficient.
What if two headings seem to fit the same paragraph?▼
Look at both and decide which one captures the main idea more completely. One heading will be about a detail that appears in the paragraph; the other will summarise the overall message. Choose the one that fits the whole paragraph.
