Why the AWL Matters for IELTS
IELTS Academic Reading passages are drawn from academic journals, newspapers, and textbooks. AWL words appear in almost every passage. More importantly, using AWL words appropriately in your Writing Task 2 essay directly boosts your Lexical Resource score.
The difference between Band 6 and Band 7 vocabulary often comes down to whether you use words like "demonstrate" instead of "show", or "analyse" instead of "look at".

- factor — a cause or element. "Economic factors play a significant role."
- approach — a method or way of dealing with something. "A holistic approach is needed."
- concept — an idea or principle. "The concept of sustainable development is widely accepted."

Adjectives for Precision

How to Learn AWL Words Effectively
Don't try to memorise definitions — it doesn't stick. Instead:
- Learn words in context: read academic articles and notice how these words are used.
- Learn collocations: "significant increase", "positive impact", "key factor".
- Use new words in your Writing Task 2 essays — this is the fastest way to make them permanent.
- Review with spaced repetition — don't study 50 words once; study 10 words five times.
