Eight weeks is enough time to improve your IELTS band score significantly — if you use the time correctly. The mistake most students make is practicing everything at once. This plan sequences your preparation for maximum efficiency.
Before Week 1: Take a Diagnostic Test
Before you start, you need a baseline. Take a full practice test under timed conditions and score it honestly. This tells you your starting point and — more importantly — which skills need the most work. Do not skip this step. Preparation without a baseline is navigation without a map.
Week 1–2: Foundation
Focus: Understanding the test format and marking criteria.
Many students fail because they practice without understanding what they're being marked on. Spend week 1 reading the official IELTS band descriptors for Writing and Speaking. Understand what "Lexical Resource" and "Coherence & Cohesion" actually mean. For Reading and Listening, understand each question type.
Daily time: 45 minutes. No timed practice yet.
Week 3–4: Skill Building
Focus: Your weakest skill, identified in your diagnostic.
This is where you do targeted practice. If Writing is weak: write 2 essays per week and get feedback. If Speaking is weak: practise cue cards every day. If Reading is weak: focus on True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings. If Listening is weak: transcription practice (listen and write every word) is the fastest improvement method.
Daily time: 60 minutes.
Week 5–6: Mixed Practice
Focus: All four skills, with continued emphasis on your weak area.
Start practising all four skills each week. Continue writing essays and getting feedback. Do at least 2 full Reading or Listening sections per week under timed conditions. Review every mistake — don't just check what was wrong, understand why.
Daily time: 60–75 minutes.
Week 7: Full Mock Tests
Focus: Test simulation and time management.
Do two full 4-skill mock tests this week, ideally on separate days. The goal is time management practice: you'll discover whether you're spending too long on single questions or running out of time in Writing.
Daily time: Variable (full test = ~3 hours).
Week 8: Consolidation
Focus: Review and confidence.
Don't try to learn new things in the final week. Review your mistakes from previous practice. Do one more mock test early in the week. In the final 2–3 days, keep practice light — focus on staying calm and reviewing strategies, not cramming new content.
Daily time: 30–45 minutes.
The Non-Negotiables
- Consistency beats intensity — 45 minutes every day is better than 5 hours on Sunday.
- Every mistake is a learning opportunity — review errors immediately while they're fresh.
- Get feedback on Writing and Speaking — self-assessment is unreliable for productive skills.
- Sleep matters — cognitive performance drops sharply with poor sleep. Don't sacrifice it for extra study time in the final week.
